Question 1192788: Train A is 200 miles west of train B. Train A starts travelling north at a constant speed of 85 mph. Two hours later, train B starts travelling east, at 90 mph. How many miles apart are the two trains after five hours?

Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
in 5 hours, A is 425 miles north of B
in 5 hours, B has gone 270 miles (only in 3 hours of motion) and now is 470 miles east of A.
Those are two legs of the right triangle.
The hypotenuse is sqrt(425^2+470^2)=633.66 miles

Train A is 200 miles west of train B. Train A starts travelling north at a constant speed of 85 mph. Two hours later, train B starts travelling east, at 90 mph. How many miles apart are the two trains after five hours?
If it's 5 hours after B started, then A would've been traveling for 7 (2 + 5) hours
In 5 hours, B would've traveled 5(90) = 450 miles, and would've been 200 + 450, or 650 miles from A's starting point
In 7 hours, A would've traveled 7(85) = 595 miles, north of its starting point
We now have a right-angled triangle, with legs of 595 and 650 miles.
Distance both trains are apart, 7 hours after A started, and 5 nours after B started:
Obviously if it's 5 hours after A started, calculations will be different.
