Two cyclists begin traveling in the same direction on the same bike path. One travels at 15 miles per hour and the other travels at 12 miles per hour. When will the cyclists be 10 miles apart?
-------------------------
1st cyclist DATA:
Rate = 15 mph ; distance = x+10 ; time = (x+10)/15 hrs.
----------------------
2nd cyclist DATA;
Rate = 12 mph ; distance = x ; time = x/12 hrs.
----------------------
EQUATION:
time = time
(x+10)/15 = x/12
12(x+10) = 15x
12x + 120 = 15x
3x = 120
x = 40 miles
---------------
Time for the 2nd cyclist = x/12 = 40/12 = 10/3 = 3 1/3 hrs
================
They will be 10 miles apart after 3 1/3 hrs.
