SPEED TIME DIST.
DOWN 15+c 84/(c+15) 84
UP 15-c 18/(15-c) 18
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website! Bubba was boating down the river. He realize that in half the time it took him to go 84 miles downstream, he could go 18 miles upstream. If the boat could travel 15 mph in still water, how fast was the current?
the current speed be x
boat speed in still water = 15 mph
with current (15+x) mph 84 miles
against current (15-x) mph 18 miles
time with current 84/(15+x)
time against current 18/(15-x)
1/2 *84/(15+x) = 18/(15-x)
42/(15+x)= 18/(15-x)
42(15-x)= 18(15+x)
630-42x = 270 +18x
60x = 360
x=6
