Chester drives his car 165 miles and has an average of a certain speed let the speed be x mph
. If the average speed had been 2mph more,---> x+2 mph
he could have traveled 176 miles in the same length of time.
Time is same
165/x = 176/(x+2)
165(x+2)= 176x
165x + 330 =176x
11x =330
x= 30 mph -----> avg speed

Then the hypothetical speed is (x+2) mph.


From the condition, you have this equation


     = .


To solve it, first cross-multiply; then simplify


    165*(x+2) = 176x

    165x + 165*2 = 176x

    330 = 176x - 165x

    330 = 11x

    x   =  = 30.


ANSWER.  His average speed was  30 mph.
