If the car traveling west is moving 10 miles per hour faster than the car traveling east, and the two cars are 342 miles apart after 3 hours, find the speed of each car.
let speed of car going east be x mph
car traveling west will be x+10 mph

They are moving in opposite directions
effective speed = 2x+2 mph
distance =342 miles
time = 3 hours
d= speed * time
342 = (2x+2)*3
342 = 6x+6
6x= 336
x= 56 mph car going east
Add 10 to the other car

            As usual,  the solution by  @Mananth is absurdist and incorrect.

            I came to bring a correct solution.

let speed of car going east be x mph

car traveling west will be x+10 mph

They are moving in opposite directions
effective speed separating is 2x+10 mph

    distance =342 miles

    time = 3 hours

    d= speed * time

    342 = (2x+10)*3
    342 = 6x+30
    6x= 312

    x= 52 mph car going east

    Add 10 to the other car

ANSWER. 52 mph for the car going east. 62 mph for the car going west.

CHECK.  (52 + 62)*3 = 342 miles.    ! Correct !

Solved (correctly).

That other person is WRONG!!.
The slower car's speed is NOT 56 mph
