The whole trip took 6 hours. If Jim walks at a rate of 5 miles per hour and rides at 31 miles per​ hour, find the amount of time he spent on the bicycle.

Let t be the time bicycling.

Then the time walking was (6-t).


Now you write the total distance equation


    31*t + 5*(6-t) = 121


Simplify and solve


    31t + 30 - 5t = 121

       26t        = 121 - 30 = 91

         t                   =  = 3.5.


ANSWER.  3.5 hours bikyng.
