The distance from the highway to Lake Snow was 160 km and Jacques made the trip in 11 hours.
For the first part of the journey he used a snowmobile and traveled at 20 km/h.
The last part of the trip was made on skis, where he averaged 10 km/h.
How far did he travel on skis
Let t be the time traveled by snowmobile(the faster time)
and (11 - t) the time by snowmobile.
D = rt
20t + 10(11-t) = 160km
10t = 50
t = 5hr, the time by snowmobile. time by skis is 6hr
(10mi/ht)(6hr) = 60mi, distance by snowmobile.
Checking our Work:
20t + 10(11-t) = 160km
100km +60km = 160km checks
