Question 117152: A cabin cruiser travles 20 miles in the same time that a power boat travels 40 miles. the cruiser travels 5 mph slower than the power boat. Find the speed of each boat.
Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Distance(d) equals Rate(r) times Time(t) or d=rt; r=d/t and t=d/r
Let r=rate of power boat
Then r-5=rate of cruiser
Amount of time taken by power boat= 40/r
Amount of time taken by cruiser=20/(r-5)
Now we are told that the above two times are equal:
20/(r-5)=40/r multiply each term by r(r-5) or cross-multiply
20r=40(r-5) get rid of parens
20r=40r-200 subtract 40r from both sides
20r-40r=40r-40r-200 collect like terms
-20r=-200 divide both sides by -20
r=10mph--------------------------------speed of power boat
r-5=10-5=5mph-----------------------------speed of cruiser
CK
20/5=40/10
4=4
Hope this helps-----ptaylor
