Question 1167592: I have a quiz tomorrow and I have been studying in math but I just cant wrap my head around these type of questions. I would really appreciate it if someone could walk me through it in detail. Question down below.
Batman leaves the airport in the Bat-copter at a speed of 240 mph
Wonder Woman leaves the same airport in her invisible airplane three hours
later, how long will it take her to catch up if she is traveling at a speed
of 600 mph
I would appreciate if you get use D1 and D2 for your variables as they stand for distance 1 and distance 2 and we use those in class. I know you have to use a variable for time so could you use t for that and make a note explaining what t means. Please and thank you.

Batman flies for 3 hours more than Wonder Woman. So

let t = hours Wonder Woman flies
then t+3 = hours Batman flies

There is no need for variables to represent the distances, because when Wonder Woman catches up to Batman their distances are the same. However, since that is apparently what you are doing in class....

D1 = Batman's distance (t+3 hours at 240 mph) = 240(t+3)
D2 = Wonder Woman's distance (t hours at 600 mph) = 600(t)

The two distances are the same:

ANSWER: Wonder Woman catches up with Batman after t=2 hours.

CHECK:
Batman t+3 = 5 hours at 240 mph = 5(240) = 1200 miles
Wonder Woman t = 2 hours at 600 mph = 2(600) = 1200 miles

:
When WW catches Bm, they will have traveled the same distance so we don't need that variable, you could say D1 = D2
t = WW's travel time
then 3 hrs longer
(t+3) = Bm's travel time
so we have a distance equation dist = speed*time
WW's dist = Bm's dist
600t = 240(t+3)
600t = 240t + 720
600t - 240t = 720
360t = 720
t = 720/360
t = 2 hrs is WW's time, (5 hrs is Bm's time)
:
:
Confirm this by finding the distance of each, should be the same
2(600) = 1200 mi
5(240) = 1200 mi
