The two friends walk in perpendicular directions. At the end of the time, their paths form 2 shorter sides of a right triangle as shown in the picture.

The distance between them is the hypotenuse of the right triangle.
Applying Pythagoras' theorem, the hypotenuse
= nearest to the 10th of a mile.
Ans = 2.2 miles
