A truck enters a highway driving 60 mph. A car enters the highway at the same place 8 minutes later and drives 73 mph in the same direction.
From the time the car enters the highway, how long will it take the car to pass the truck?
:
let t = travel time of the car
then
= travel time of the truck, (convert 8 min to hrs)
:
When the car catches the truck they will have traveled the same dist
Write a dist equation, dist = speed * time
73t = 60(t+)
distribute the 60
73t = 60t + 8
73t - 60t = 8
13t = 8
t = hrs which is * 60 = 36.9 min for the car to catch the truck

hrs is the 1st car's head start
Let = distance in miles the car travels
until it catches the truck
Let = time in hrs the car takes to catch the truck

Let the time the car takes to overtake the truck be T
Then we get the following DISTANCE equation:
73T = 60T + 8 ---- Distributing right-side
73T - 60T = 8
13T = 8
