Question 1150786: Two tankers, one 160m in length and the other 120m in length, travel parallel to each other at different but constant speeds. When traveling in opposite directions it takes them 12 seconds to pass each other, and when traveling in the same direction they take 75 seconds to pass each other. Find the difference in their speeds, in meters/second.

.

Consider traveling in the same direction.

Their relative speed is the difference .

The condition "they pass each other" in this situation is

     = 160 m + 120m = 280 m,

where "t" is the given time of 75 seconds.

Hence, the difference of their speeds is meters per second, or 13.440 kilometers per hour. ANSWER.

Solved.

The rest of the condition is irrelevant, excessive and unnecessary.
It is not used in the solution.
