                  SPEED TIME DISTANCE

GOING THERE 100 d/100 d

CAME BACK 80 d/80 d

TOTAL 9

The ratio of the two speeds is 100:80 or 5:4, and the two distances are the same. That means the ratio of the two times is 4:5.

So let the time going be 4x and the time returning be 5x. The total time was 9 hours, so

The time going was 4x = 4 hours; the time returning was 5x = 5 hours.

So the distance each direction is 4(100) = 5(80) = 400 miles.
