Question 1146350: Two engineering students are solving a problem leading to a quadratic equation. One student made a mistake in the coefficient of the first-degree term, got roots of 2 and -3.
The other student made a mistake in the coefficient of the constant term got roots of -1 and 4. What is correct equation?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
roots of 2 and -3 gives you factors of (x-2) * (x+3) which gives you the quadratic equation of x^2 + x - 6
roots of -1 and 4 gives you factors of (x+1) * (x-4) which gives you the quadratic equation of x^2 - 3x - 4
the first degree term is the x term.
the incorrect coefficient of the x term is 1.
the correct coefficient of the x term is -3.
the first equation has an incorrect coefficient of the x term.
the second equation has an incorrect constant term.
that means the correct equation takes the coefficient of the x term of the second equation and the constant term of the first equation.
that makes the correct equation x^2 -3x - 6.
