A tugboat traveling at 40kph leaves port at 4PM carrying off some contraband goods.
A patrol boat assigned to stop the goods leaves the same post an hour later and drove at 90kph. what time will the patrol boat overtake the tugboat?
:
let t = travel time of the patrol boat, when it overtakes the tug
then
(t+1) = travel time of the tug
:
When the patrol boat overtakes the tug, they will have traveled the same dist
Write dist equation; dis = speed*time
90t = 40(t+1)
90t = 40t + 40
90t - 40t = 40
50t = 40
t = 40/50
t = 4/5 hr
or
4/5 * 60 = 48 min
therefore: 5:48 PM patrol catches tug
:
:
Check: find the actual dist each traveled. 4/5 hr = .8 hrs
1.8 * 40 = 72 mi
.8 * 90 = 72 mi
