Question 1139907: your drive 60 miles at 60 mph, then 60 miles at 30 mph. What was your average speed?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you drive 60 miles at 60 miles per hour and you drive 60 miles at 30 miles per hour.
r * t = d
r = rate
t = time
d = distance
when you drive 60 miles at 60 miles per hour, r * t = d becomes 60 * t = 60.
solve for t to get t = 60 / 60 = 1.
when you drive 60 miles at 30 miles per hour, r * t = d becomes 30 * t = 60.
solve for t to get t = 60 / 30 = 2.
the total distance you traveled is 120 miles.
the total time it took is 3 hours.
r * t = d becomes r * 3 = 120
solve for r to get r = 40 miles per hour.
your average speed as 40 miles per hour.
