After the first 10 seconds, Marco is 3 yards ahead of Elijah.
While Marco rests for 5 seconds, Elijah runs another 15 yards; after those 5 seconds, he is 12 yards ahead of Marco.
Since Marco runs 3 yards farther than Elijah in each 10 seconds, and since he is now 4*3=12 yards behind Elijah, it will take him 4*10=40 seconds to make up the 12 yards.
