Distance each way, d
              SPEEDS TIME DISTANCE
TO 38 d/38 d
FROM 57 d/57 d
TOTAL 5

If you note that the ratio of the two speeds is 2:3, then finding the answer is easy with a bit of mental arithmetic.

Since the ratio of 38mph to 57mph is 2:3, the ratio of times at the two speeds (since the distances are the same) has to be 3:2. Since the total time was 5 hours, they spent 3 hours driving there at 38mph and 2 hours driving back home at 57mph.

So the distance from their home to the Grand Canyon is 38*3 = 144 miles, or 57*2 = 114 miles.
