Question 1127868: At 1:00 pm:
Train A leaves its depot heading south
556 miles away, Train B leaves its depot heading north
The two trains pass each other at 1:30 pm
Train A is 1.586 times faster than Train B
What are the mph speeds of both trains?
(Thank you!)
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
B goes x mph
A goes 1.586x mph
In 1 hour, their combined speed is 2.586 x
In 1/2 hour, their combined speed is 1.293x, and that equals 556 miles
x=556/1.293=430 mph B
1.586x=682 mph A
In one half hour, A goes 341 miles and B goes 215 miles, and that distance covers everything between the two depots.
