Two cars start at the same time from two towns.
792 kilometers apart and meet in 9 hours.
One car can travel 8 km faster than the other car.
How far did each car travel before they meet?
:
Find the speed of the cars
let s = speed of one car
and
let (s+8) = speed of the other car
:
Write a distance equation; dist = time * speed
9s + 9(s+8) = 792
9s + 9s + 72 = 792
18s = 792 - 72
18s = 720
s = 720/18
s = 40 km/h for one car
and obviously
48 km/h for the other car
:
"How far did each car travel before they meet?"
Car one: 9 * 40 = 360 km
Car Two: 9 * 48 = 432 km
-----------------------------
check total dist: 792 km

The following SPEED equation is the way to go since distance is what's being sought: , with D being the speed of the SLOWER car.
Solve this for D to get:
That's all!!! Nothing COMPLEX or CONFUSING!
