Question 1122194: the deepest point in the first ocean is 834 meters more than three times the deepest point in a second ocean. if the deepest point in the first ocean is 10,398m how many meters is the deepest point in the second ocean.
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x equal the deepest point of the first ocean and let y equal the deepest of the second ocean.
the deepest point in the first ocean is 834 meters more than three times the deepest point in the second ocean.
the equation for that is x = 834 + 3y
if the deepest point in the first ocean is 10398, how many meters is the deepest point in the second ocean.
you have x = 10398, so the equation becomes 10398 = 834 + 3y
subtract 834 from both sides of this equation to get 9564 = 3y
solve for y to get y = 9564 / 3 = 3188.
the deepest point of the first ocean is 10398
the deepest point of the second ocean is 3188.
3 times 3188 = 9564
plus 834 = 10398
solution looks good.
