Question 1121596: The Tompkins drove 104.25 miles to their mountain cabin. They averaged 52 mi/hr before lunch and averaged only 35 mi/hr in the mountains after lunch. If their afternoon drive took half the time of the morning drive, how far and long did they travel on each part of the trip?
Answer by greenestamps(13216)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

They traveled for x hours at 35mph and 2x hours at 52mph. Since distance is rate times time, the total distance they traveled was

35(x)+52(2x)

Write and solve the equation that says that total distance was 104.25 miles.

That will give you x, the amount of time they traveled at 35mph after lunch. From that you can get the answers to all the questions.
