Let L be the unknown distance (in yards).

Then the "time" equation is


 =  - 2.


Left side is Alan's time.  Right side is the Bill's time minus 2 seconds.


Multiply both sides by 7.5. You will get


2.5L = 3*(L-35) - 15


2.5L = 3L - 105 - 15


2.5L = 3L - 120


120 = 3L - 2.5L 


120 = 0.5L  ====>  L =  = 240.


Answer.  The distance is 240 yards.
