Question 1109161: A cyclist traveled 15
kilometers per hour faster than an in-line skater. In the time it took the cyclist to travel 12
kilometers, the skater had gone 6
kilometers. Find the speed of the skater.
Answer by rothauserc(4718) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x be the rate of the skater, then the rate of the cyclist is x+15
:
we have two equations, where t is the time
:
1) (x+15) * t = 12
:
2) x * t = 6
:
solve equations 1 and 2 for t
:
t = 12/(x+15)
t = 6/x
:
since t is the same for th skater and the cyclist, we can set the right side of each equation = to each other
:
12/(x+15) = 6/x
:
cross multiply both fractions
:
12x = 6 * (x+15)
:
12x = 6x +90
:
6x = 90
:
x = 15
:
