Let x be the distance that Peter has walked when he meet Ben.
Total distance of Peter = x

Ben walked 4 times as fast as Peter, that means Ben has walked 4 times as much as Peter
Total distance of Ben = 4x

At the same time, Ben has walked 20 km hike and walk back to meet Peter which distance is 20-x km
Total distance of Ben = 20 + 20-x
With this information, we know that
4x = 20 + (20-x) ..... by comparing Ben's total distance
4x+x = 40
5x = 40
x = 8
Therefore, Peter has walked 8km when they met
