Question 1102175: Toontown and Teentown are 350km apart. Andy is travelling from Toontown to Teentown at an average speed of 40km/hr, while Michael is travelling from Teentown to Toontown at the speed of 60km/hr. How far away from Toontown would Andy be when they meet?

When they meet, the two together have traveled 350km.

The ratio of the speeds is 40:60, or 2:3; that means Andy has traveled 2/5 of the total 350km, or 140km, and Michael has traveled 3/5 of the total, or 210km.

Since Andy is the one traveling from Toontown to Teentown, they meet when they are 140km from Toontown.

.
1 - Physics style solution

Their relative speed is 60 km/h + 40 km/h = 100 km/h.

It means that the distance between them decreases at the rate of 100 km/h.

Hence, they meet each other in Time = = = 3.5 hours.

At this time Andy will be 40*3.5 = 140 miles from Toontown.

2 - Algebra style solution

Let "t" be the time they meet each other.

To that moment Andy will cover the distance of 60*t miles, while Michael will cover 40*t miles.

In all these distance cover the whole/entire distance of 350 miles, which gives you an equation

60t + 40t = 350, or

(60+40)*t = 350  ====>  100t = 350  ====>  t =  = 3.5 hour.

Thus we obtained again this time interval of 3.5 hours till the meeting moment,

and Andy will cover his 3.5*40 = 140 miles from Toontown.

Using the method of alligation.
60 60 3/5*350=210 km at 60 kph Michael from Teentown
      100 210+140= 350 km at 100 kph
40 40 2/5*350=140 km at 40 kph Andy from Toontown
           100
