Let D be that "one way" distance, in miles.

The time spent on the way to the library is  hours.

The time spent on the way back is  hours.


The equation for the total time spent is

 +  = 2   hours.      //  This equation is the DIRECT translation of the condition (!)


To solve it, multiply both sides by 12. You will get

2D + D = 2*12  ====>  3D = 24  ====>  D  =  = 8.


Answer.  One way distance is 8 miles.

Check.   Time "to there"" =  =  hours.

         Time back        =  =  hours

                             +  =  = 2 hours.    ! Correct !
