Question 1095856: A whale is swimming in a straight line at a rate of 34 kilometers per hour. Trailing exactly 2 kilometers behind is a whale-watching tour boat that is traveling 81 kilometers per hour. How long will it be before the tour boat catches up to the whale?

Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
distance=velocity * time
The boat has to go 2 km at a net closing speed of 81-34 or 47 km/h
2=47 km/h*t h
t=2/47 hours or 120/47 minutes or 2.55 min.
In 2.55 min, the whale will travel 68/47 km; the boat will travel 162/47 km. The latter distance is 2 km more than the first one.
2 minutes and 33 seconds
