Answer by addingup(3677)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the speed of the truck:
2x+2x+2(20) = 220
4x + 40 = 220
4x = 180
x = 45 this is the speed of the truck
The speed of the car: 45+20 = 65
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Check:
car × 2 hours + truck × 2 hours = 220
= (65 × 2) + (45 × 2) = 220
= 130 + 90 = 220 Correct
Truck_________Car
. (x). .(220miles) (20+x)miles/hr
.
After 2 hours, the car covers 2*(20+x)miles during which time the truck covers the remaining distance = 2x miles
.
= Distance now covered by both vehicle = 220 miles
.
2(20+x)+2x = 220
40+4x = 220
4x = 180
x = 180/4
x = 45
.
Therefore the Truck moves at 45miles/hr
.
While the car moves at (20+45)miles/hr
= 65miles/hr
.
Hence, while the car moved at a speed of 65miles/hr, the truck moved at 45miles/hr
.
a rental truck and a car traveling toward each other on the interstate are 220 miles apart. If the car is traveling 20 miles per hour faster than the rental truck, and they pass after 2 hours, how fast each vehicle traveling?
No, no, no, no! Don't let this person confuse you. None of the speeds were ever, are not, and never will be 90 mph.
Do interstates allow vehicles to go that fast? I don't think in America, and certainly not on the Autobahn (80 mph, recommended)!
In addition, A TRUCK DOING 90 mph? Doesn't this person realize that such an answer is unrealistic and RIDICULOUS? I guess not!!
