Two motorcycles are traveling at speeds of 120 kilometers per hour and 90 kilometers per hour respectively.
If the faster one travels for 4 hours longer than the slower one and also goes twice as far, how far did the slow one travel
:
let t = the travel time of the slow one
then
90t = the distance the slow one traveled
and
(t+4) = travel time of the faster cycle
then
120(t+4) = the distance of the faster
:
A simple equation
120(t+4) = 2(90t)
120t + 480 = 180t
480 = 180t - 120t
480 = 60t
t = 480/60
t = 8 hrs
therefore
8 * 90 = 720 km traveled by the slower cycle
:
:
We can confirm this by find the dist traveled by the faster cycle (4hr longer)
120 * 12 = 1440 km which is twice as far as the slower
