Question 1092153: The speed of light is 300 000 000 m/s.calculate the distance,in metres ,light travel in one minute.give your answer in standard form

this is for the chapter exponential notation please let me know.

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the speed of light is approximately 300,000,000 meters per second.

that's equivalent to 3.0 * 10^8 meters in a second if you display it in scientific notation.

multiply that by 60 and you get 1.8 * 10^10 meters in a minute if you display it in scientific notation.

consider that 300,000,000 * 60 is equal to 18,000,000,000 meters per minute.

that's 18 billion meters per minute.

1 billion is equal to 10^9, therefore 18 billion meters per minute is equal to 18 * 10^9 meters per minute.

to get it into scientific notation divide the left side of that by 10 and multiply the right side of that by 10 and you get:

1.8 * 10^9 * 10^1 which becomes 1.8 * 10^10 in scientific notation.

if you mean scientific notation when you say standard form, then this is the answer you're looking for.

here's a reference on scientific notation.
