Question 1090146: A ship traveled at an average rate of 12 miles per hour going west. It then traveled at an average rate of 17 miles per hour heading south. If the ship traveled a total of 126 miles in 8 hours, how many miles were traveled heading south?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x hours going west at 12 miles/hour or 12x miles
(8-x) hours going south at 17 m/h or 17(8-x)=136-17x miles
Those two add to 126
12x+136-17x=126
-5x=-10
x=2 hours @12 mph=24 miles
8-x=6 hours @17 mph=102 miles
total is 126 miles
