Question 1089102: Eric decided to drive across the country. The route he took covered a total of 3420 miles. One day, he determined that his distance from his starting point was exactly 60 miles more than twice the distance remaining until the finishing point. How far was Eric from the finishing point of his trip? Define the unknown quantities in terms of a variable.

Let n be the distance remaining to the finish. Then, the amount already traveled would be 60+2n. So:
n+60+2n=3420
3n=3360
n=1120 miles til the finish.
