Question 1078071: I have a distance problem: At noon, the hot air balloon headed north at 8 miles per hour. Three hours later, the glider headed south from the same location at 16 miles per hour. At what time will the hot air balloon be 168 miles from the glider?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
balloon time is x
plane time is x-3
8x+16(x-3)=168
8x+16x-48=168
24x=216
x=9 hours for balloon, 9*8=72 miles
x-3=6 hours for plane, 6*16=96 miles
They add to 168 miles
9 p.m.
