how far would he have needed to walk on the final day to bring his average daily mileage up to 35 miles?
:
let n = no. days he walked prior to the last day
= 33
32n + 40 = 33(n+1)
32n + 40 = 33n + 33
40 - 33 = 33n - 32n
7 = n
He walked 7 days prior to the last day
:
let m = no. mi he has to walk on the last day to average 35 mi
= 35
= 35
224 + m = 8 * 35
m = 280 - 224
m = 56 mi he would have to walk on the last day to average 35 mi for the 8 days
