Let t=time that elapses until the two vehicles are 274 mi apart
When Bus#2 leaves, Bus#1 has already travelled 44*1 or 44 miles
Distance Bus#1 travels=44+44t
Distance Bus#2 travels=48t
Now we are told that the distance Bus#1 travels plus the distance Bus#2 travels equals 274 mi, or:
44+44t+48t=274 subtract 44 from both sides
44-44+44t+48t=274-44 collect like terms
92t=230 divide both sides by 92
t=2.5 hours------------------------time that elapses until the two vehicles are 274 mi apart
Bus#2 leaves at 2:00pm. So 2:00pm +2.5 hours=4:30pm the time when the two busses are 274 mi apart
