at noon, a passenger ship and a freighter left a port traveling in opposite directions. By midnight, the passenger ship was 3 times farther from port than the freighter was. How far was the freighter from port if the distance between the ships was 84 miles?
:
Let x = freighters distance from the port
Then
3x = pass ship from port
:
3x + x = 84
4x = 84
x = 84/4
x = 21 mi from port, a real slow ship
:
Freighter----x--------Port-------------------3x------------------Pass
