Question 1056603: The speed of a passenger train is 18 mph faster than the speed of a freight train. The passenger train travels 280 miles in the same time it takes the freight train to travel 190 miles. Find the speed of each train.
Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
speed of p=x
speed of f=x-18
speed*time=distance
Therefore, time=distance/speed
280/x=190/(x-18)
280x-5040=190x by cross-multiplying
90x=5040
x=56 mph Passenger
x-18=38 mph Freight
to go 280 miles at 56 mph=5 hours
to go 190 miles at 38 mph=5 hours
