Problem: The amount of newsprint used by a newspaper varies directly as the number of people in the area are served by that paper. According to the North American Newsprint Producers Association, the newsprint used to supply the annual needs of 1,000 people is 34,800 kg. How many kilograms would be needed to supply Colombus, Ohio, which has a population of about 720,000?

find k first
34800=1000k
k=34.8
Now use k in the next part
y=kx
y=34.8 (720,000)=25,056,000

Check
1/34.8=720/x, doing everything in thousands
cross-multiply
x=34.8*720=25,056, and that is thousands.

Well first of all, since it's 1000 people = 34,800kg and we're trying to find Colubmus Ohio's population of 720,000
We need to find how much KG for a person which is basically 34800/1000
That should be 1 person = 34.8
Then you multiply that 34.8kg by the population of 720,000 which results in
25,056,000
