Brothers Paul and Pete walk 2 miles to school from home.
Paul can walk to school in 24 minutes.
Pete has slept in again and needs to run to school.
Paul walks at a constant rate, and Pete runs at a constant rate.
The graph of the function is shown below.
Pete's run: 8 miles per hour
a. Which brother is moving at a greater rate? Explain how you know.
Convert Paul's time to mph:
24/60 = .4 hrs
s = 2/.4
s = 5 mph, slower than Pete
:
b. If Pete leaves 5 minutes after Paul, will he catch up to Paul before they get to school.
Find how long it takes Pete running at 8 mph
2/8 = .25 hrs or 15 min, add 5 min later, 20 min, so he will catch up with Paul
