Let r be the rate at which Dr. Nelms rode on the second leg. Then the first leg's rate would be r+4. So:
35/(r+4)+22/r=2
35r+22(r+4)=2rē+8r
2rē-49r-88=0
r=26.18 or -1.68
Throwing out the negative result, we get the first part of the trip traveled at 30.18 mph, and the second at 26.18. ☺☺☺☺
