Question 1044360: Two cars, 465 kilometers apart, begin driving toward each other on a long, straight highway. One car travels 75 kilometers per hour and the other 8080 kilometers per hour. At the same time, a canary, starting on one car, flies back and forth between the two cars as they approach each other. If the canary flies 100 kilometers per hour and spends no time to turn around at each car, how far has it flown when the cars collide?
Answer by jorel555(1290) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The cars are heading toward each other, one at 75 kmh, the other at 80 kmh (I'm assuming). This gives them a total velocity of 75+80, or 155 kmh. So:
465/155=3 hours before impact.
If the canary is flying at the rate of 100 kmh, and does so for the 3 hours before impact, it will have traveled a total distance of 3 x 100, or 300 kms before the cars collide. ☺☺☺☺
