Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
An airplane takes off and heads due west with a slope of 5/3. After 1 minute, the plane is 6000 feet above the ground. What is the distance the plane has flown in this direction?
-------------------------
Draw the figure::
--------------------------
Note: 6000/5 = 1200
So, slope = rise/run = 5/3 = (5*1200)/(3*1200) = 6000/3600
----------------------------------------------------
You have a right triangle with slope = 5/3 = 6000/3600
height = 6000
Ans: distance = base = 3600 ft.
