Question 1038460: a trip takes 5 hours in a car moving at 40 miles per hour how long would a train take if it moves at 100 miles per hour

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
rate * time = distance.
rate is in miles per hour.
time is in hours.
distance is in miles.
for the car, ....
rate = 40 miles per hour and time = 5 hours.
distance is therefore equal to 40 * 5 = 200 miles.
for the train, .....
rate = 100 miles per hour and distance = 200 miles.
rate * time = distance becomes 100 * time = 200
divide both sides of this equation by 100 to get time = 2 hours.
