The 1st is 550 miles away when the 2nd takes off.
The 2nd gains on the 1st at 80 mi/hr (630 - 550)

550/80 = 6.88 hours
+ the 1st hour --> 7.88 hours
=================
In that time, the 1st plane would fly 3781 miles, past LA.
Kind of a trick question.
The 2nd plane catches up at LAX in 1800/630 hours = 2.86 + 1 = 3.86 hours.
IDK if it passes the 1st plane.

Let time the 1st plane (Chicago to LA) takes to get to �meeting� point, be T
Then time the 2nd plane (LA to Chicago) takes to get to �meeting� point is: T � 1
Distance 1st plane traveled to get to meeting point: 550T
Distance 2nd plane traveled to get to meeting point: 630(T � 1)
We then get the following DISTANCE equation: 550T + 630(T � 1) = 1,800
550T + 630T � 630 = 1,800
1,180T = 1,800 + 630
1,180T = 2,430
T, or time it took for 1st plane to get to �meeting� point =
