"Two boys on bicycles start from the same place and ride in opposite directions. One rides twice as far as the other. In 3 hours they are 27 kilometers apart. Find the rate of speed for each boy."
--------------
There's no "rate of speed."
There's rate, or rate of motion, and there's speed.
-----
Going twice as far in the same time --> 2x the speed.
Their speeds are added when going in opposite directions.
The sum of their speeds is 27/3 = 9 km/hr
-----------
--> 3 and 6 km/hr
