Question 1032580: Two trains start out at the same time from stations that are 250 miles apart. One train is traveling at 7 mph slower than twice the speed of the other train. They meet each other, on parallel tracks, 2 hours later. What is the speed of the faster train?
Answer by fractalier(6550) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If we call the rate of the slower train r, than the faster one travels at r+7.
We also know that rate times time = distance, or rt = d.
The time they travel is two hours. We then write
2r + 2(r+7) = 250
2r + 2r + 14 = 250
4r + 14 = 250
4r = 236
r = 59 mph so that the faster train travels at
r+7 = 66 mph
