Andrew and Karen started at the same place and walked in opposite directions. Andrew walked at a speed of six kilometres an hour and Karen walked at a speed of four kilometres an hour. After they had walked for half an hour, what was the distance between them?

use the formula "rate(r) times time(t) = distance(d)"

Andrew's rate is 6km/hr and Karen's is 4km/hr and they walked in opposite directions for 1/2 hour
:
we add their two distances
:
(6 * (1/2)) + (4 * (1/2)) = 3 + 2 = 5

Hi there,
Andrew walked at 6 km/hr
Karen walked at 4 km/hr
They walked in opposite directions.
In half an hour:-
Andrew will have walked 3 km (6/2)
Karen will have walked 2 km (4/2)
Therefore they will be 3 + 2
= 5 km apart.
