Question 10289: Two felons (aka bank robbers) flee the First National Bank traveling noth at 100 mph. The alarm goes in and 15 minutes later the local law enforcement (aka police) give chase at 110 mph. When and where will the felons be apprehended?
Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = time of the police in hours
x+ 1/4 = time of the bank robbers in hours
110 = rate of police
100 = rate of bank robbers
Distance = Distance
RT = RT
110x = 100x + 25
10x = 25
x = 2.5 hrs from the time the police began the chase
x + 1/4 = 2.75 hrs = time of bank robbers before being caught by police.
Police will travel 2.5* 110 = 275 miles.
Bank robbers travel 2.75*100 = 275 miles.
It checks!
