Let L be the distance under the question.

Then  is the time spent from home to work, and  is the time to return back.

Your equation is

 +  =  = .    (The right side is 1 hour and 3 minutes).

To solve it, multiply both sides by 400 to get rid off the denominators.

rate = 80 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/80 hrs

To home DATA:
rate = 25 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = x/25 hrs

Equation::
time + time = time
x/80 + x/25 = 63/60
----
60*25x + 60*80x = 63*80*25
--------------------------------
1500x + 4800x = 126000
63000x = 126000
x = 126/63
x = 2 miles
